How do you start your day? The first thing in your mind is gratitude.
Waking up this morning, I smile
Twenty four brand new hours are before me
I vow to live mindfully in each moment
And to look at beings with eyes of compassion and love.
This is from Master Tran’s Dharma Talk “The Mind is a Field”. Frankly speaking, I write this down because prior to this, my grateful thoughts were quite scattered. Some days I was grateful for many different experiences, goals, family, friends, food, thoughts, wishes. Some days I was just happy to be. Some days I just gave grateful thoughts in silence. Sometimes I was just forcing myself to be grateful for something. When I practice this recitation consistently, I have a clear intent that captures the essence of what I intend to practice. And ever since, I became happier.
By all means, this recitation is nothing unique to Buddhist. It’s just a mindful practice. That’s what makes it Buddhist.
